Events & Social
Welcome from Rear Commodore (Sail & Power), Cliff Laxton...
"I hope you will join us on the water as often as you can. We wish you all an excellent season and look forward to meeting both "regulars" and members who are on their first PSYC event. Here is some general information on our events on the water...."
Introduction
During the last two seasons we have organised and run a number of very successful Rallies and Meets in and around the Solent. Over normal two day weekends the Rallies, Meets or Anchorages tend to be Solent based with Cross Channel destinations and further South Coast passages being undertaken at Bank Holiday weekends when the extra day is available. Both Sail and Power boats have participated although there has not been a great deal of involvement by the faster planing Power boat members. For the past two years we have also, as a Club, organised one or two Summer Cruises which have involved Cross Channel destinations ranging from Normandy down to the North Brittany Coast.
This year’s programme revisits many of the Solent destinations which we have enjoyed in the past and, in response to member’s suggestions, we have planned a couple of Anchorages and we will be happy to incorporate some more if there is a demand. We intend to organise two Summer Cruise plans again but at the time of writing the destinations had not been finalised although a staggered start at the beginning and the middle of July seemed to be favoured to accommodate school and institutional holiday periods.
Suggestions for the further development of the Club’s waterborne activities are always welcome, please pass them on to any Committee member verbally or by email if you prefer. If you have not previously come along to any of our activities please do so and bring your friends, as we are always looking to recruit new members.
Gaining experience
PSYC members span the entire range of experience and qualification. Event leaders and committee members are always willing to advise on passages and ports of which they have experience, and cruising with other boats is an excellent way of developing competence and confidence. For longer passages, particularly those involving sailing at night, a crew of two people with limited experience can be a challenging situation. A better idea is to pool experience and spread the watch-keeping by sailing as a bigger crew, either on your own or another member's boat. Event leaders or the appropriate rear-commodore will be happy to help you find someone with whom you can sail. The same applies if your boat is ashore or if you are between boats.
Joining events
All times in this programme are UK local (BST or GMT as appropriate). High water times refer to Portsmouth on the first day of the event unless otherwise stated. Start times will be settled on the basis of weather, tide and types of boats participating. Please make sure that you indicate your intention of coming to one of the people whose names are attached to the event. You will then be kept in the picture over plans. All events welcome both power and sail.
Types of event

Rallies in general include at least one night for which berths are pre-booked by the organiser, and may include a booked meal ashore. It is essential that you confirm your intention of coming on a Rally at least a couple of weeks ahead so that organisers don't waste time and cause irritation by making multiple calls to ports and pubs to change bookings. Please don't wait to see what the weather outlook is like; if the weather is unsuitable the organiser will cancel the event anyway.

Meets are less formal events in which nothing is booked and we take our chance on berths and any meals ashore; some involve anchoring or traditional moorings such as buoys and piles. The contact member will note the intention to participate, settle times and keep in touch before and during the event. There will usually be a social gathering with drinks in, on or around the boats or in a nearby bar during each event.

Communication
During events, please keep a listening watch on VHF channel 16/72 and call other PSYC boats on channel 72 to avoid cluttering 16. If channel 72 is overcrowded on the day, the lead boat will notify a change.
Safety and liability
Skippers are reminded that they are responsible for the seaworthiness, competent navigation and general safety of their boat and crew at all times during PSYC events. Owners must ensure that their boat's insurance is sufficient to cover all third party risks.
